Josh’s First Ride: A Day of Joy, Trust, and New Independence
Today, Josh, accompanied by his mom Morgan, experienced his very first (after a long time) horseback ride - a gentle, empowering moment made possible through careful supports and the Debbie Murphy Foundation’s person-centered approach.
Josh arrived at the riding center curious and calm. With the support of trained staff and volunteers, he was introduced to the horse through touch and sound so he could meet the animal on his own terms. The team used clear verbal cues, tactile guidance, and gentle, step-by-step instructions so Josh could feel safe and connected throughout the experience.
With a volunteer walking and guiding from beside, Josh enjoyed a short, guided ride. He smiled as he felt the steady rhythm and the horse’s warmth beneath him - small, powerful sensations that opened a new world of movement and confidence. After the ride, Josh took part in grooming and feeding the horse, placing a treat into the animal’s mouth under supervision. That moment of hands-on care let him round out the visit with connection and calm.
This outing wasn’t just about the ride; it was about choice, dignity, and building new skills. The foundation’s funding helped cover specialized assistance and adaptive supports so Josh could participate comfortably and safely. His family described the day as “joyful and meaningful,” and the team saw tangible confidence and engagement that we’ll continue to build on with future activities.
